Last October we took a trip out to Estes Park, CO and this time I remembered my plein air supplies! Our cabin, located off Elkhorn Ave, was surrounded by glorious mountain faces and beautiful pine and birch trees. Watching the sun rise through the freshly orange leaves and warm up the mountain faces was a treat I just couldn't pass up. I poured myself a cup of coffee, set up my easel and painted away. This plein air truly feels like a diary entry: listening to the river flow, the leaves blow and even a flock of wild turkeys running by on the trail! Unfortunately this was the only painting I made on the trip, but next time I'll make more! This painting is part of my personal collection.

Cholera, Smallpox and the Black Death

A while ago I received some Giant Microbes plushies as a gift. It was a 5-pack and contained Spanish Flu, Typhoid Fever, Cholera, Smallpox and the Black Death. I love that they have cute little eyes and they look like the microbes themselves. I really liked putting this composition against a neon background, the blue vs orange complementary color scheme is loud and it really pops. 22/52

Candy Hearts

I actually love candies like conversation hearts and candy corn. My husband may make fun of me for my "terrible candy taste" but that means more for me. This painting actually sparked my love of painting candies! I just loved the dramatically lit hearts against the stark magenta background. These hearts said the silliest things, like "bae". The trick to make it "look" like there's writing on the hearts is to actually just paint abstract shapes! Who knew? I ate all of these candies. 5/52

Illuminated Halloween Skull

Halloween-time is my favorite season and this was the first Halloween my husband and I celebrated together. We often light our spaces with Christmas lights and candles, but the way that the light was shining on this skull from Michaels was absolutely stunning and spooky. I used so many colors of oil paint just to make the ranges of reds, pinks, purples and oranges right. A lot of quinacridones and reds were used in the making of this painting. I love this painting so much and feel like it encapsulates who I am as a painter that I turned this painting into my business card!
